This piece is part of my FortEtudes series. Each FortEtude is a short study on the theme of bravery, technically challenging while allowing expressive freedom. I expanded the series in 2020 for friends whose ensembles had closed during the quarantine. I wanted to spotlight instruments we rarely hear unaccompanied.
FortEtude #4 is for Sgt. Eddie Sanders III, principal bassoonist with the United States Air Force Band. Here, the bassoon plays larger and larger leaps in an ever freer, wider, and more dynamic line. This piece is appropriate for advanced high school players.
