As One, 3332/4231/4 perc/pno/strings, 5’00” (2012)

As One is a vibrant overture for full orchestra. It symbolizes the power of an idea coalescing in the minds of many thinkers and the power of many individuals united to a shared purpose.

High and low lines converge to a common point, off-set rhythms fall into a shared pattern, and the two main themes evolve into a single new entity. Winds, brass, percussion, and strings contribute different themes that together form harmonious counterpoint.

Begun at MacDowell 2011 and completed 2012.

All Things Being Equal, 3232/4231/4perc/pno/strings, 4’00” (2012)

The sections of the orchestra struggle to match each other, but what begins as a fight for dominance ends as riotous celebration as the different forces are superimposed into a new and harmonious whole.

If and When, 3232/4231/1perc/harp/pno/strings, 6’00” (2012)

A piece about doubt and hope. The “when” music in low strings is harmonically stable, the “if” music in high percussion is harmonically ambiguous, and a declamatory line in the oboe or brass divides or unites the two.

Hero’s Welcome, 2222/4231/3perc/strings, 6’30” (2010)

This overture is a tribute to those who display courage in the face of extreme challenges. The angular lines and extreme registers represent maximum effort.
