The Curtis Symphony Orchestra, Cristian Macelaru, conductor
As One is a vibrant overture for full orchestra. It symbolizes the power of an idea coalescing in the minds of many thinkers and the power of many individuals united to a shared purpose.
High and low lines converge to a common point, off-set rhythms fall into a shared pattern, and the two main themes evolve into a single new entity. Winds, brass, percussion, and strings contribute different themes that together form harmonious counterpoint.
The work was begun at the MacDowell Colony in 2011 and completed in 2012.
