This piece is part of my FortEtudes series. Each FortEtude is a short study on the theme of bravery, technically challenging while allowing expressive freedom. I expanded the series in 2020 for friends whose orchestras had closed during the quarantine. I wanted to spotlight instruments we rarely hear unaccompanied.
Asuka Elias, Julliard graduate, recorded the piece at home and premiered it at an online concert with the Clara Duo. The clarinet plays longer and longer phrases, with increasing chromaticism, range, and dynamic level before finally coming to rest.
