FortEtude #1 (oboe)

Duration: 3.5 minutes

Excerpt:

Amanda Talley, oboe

Each FortEtude is a short study on the theme of bravery, technically challenging while allowing expressive freedom. I expanded the series in 2020 for friends whose orchestras had closed during the quarantine. I wanted to spotlight instruments we rarely hear unaccompanied.

This first FortEtude was written in 2008 and revised in 2020. Amanda Talley, oboist of the New Mexico Philharmonic, recorded the new version at home. Oboes too often play laments, songs of resignation— this soloist fights.

Premiered by William Wielgus at the Glenn Korff School of Music, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 10/15/24.
